Data says it's not so likely that he will return later and get a degree...

There are numerous studies on this. One, done by the American Council on Education, examined what percent of students who do return actually go on to graduate. The study covered the period of 2005-2008. It showed that most never go back for all kinds of reasons, and of those that do, only 30% end up graduating.

So, your opinion aside, he'll have to be the exception, not the rule.
