I don't buy it that he has it that much worse than others. He benefits greatly
from the expectation that most LDS kids will be more inclined towards BYU than other schools. If he's seriously being scared off from kids because he gets the impression that being recruited by BYU is something they expected, when:

1. They played football in the same county as BYU at a high enough level to be noticed and recruited by schools of similar or greater profile much further away

2. They're faithful members of the sponsoring institution

3. Their parents played for BYU

then he's mental.

Just like BYU would expect a kid like that to give BYU a look, the kid (and his parents) has every right to expect that BYU would show at least as much interest in them as other schools, and to be perplexed or even offended when they don't.
