All about precedant.
Many D coordinators get promotions and then hire a solid OC to run an offense and are successful.
The question is how many triple-option HCs make the transition from triple option to a more traditional O, including a spread or read-option, and do it well? That list might be really, really short. In fact, not sure I can think of 1 right now.
