Hmmm - OR, even more reason to recognize that playing a sched of non "power 4"
opponents in 2024 definitely DOES mean you're playing inferior teams with less talent while in 1984 there was no "power 4" or "power 5" cartel that was funneling 95% of the elite talent into their rosters.
In brief: there was far greater parity between 1977 and 1997 than there has been since, and definitely than there has been in the last 15 years.
At the time that we were facing Hawaii, Wyoming, and New Mexico every year, they could still attract talent on a RELATIVELY equal playing field. They were not the weak sisters of the poor that most MWC teams are in 2024.
