was bad and consistently put the offense in bad spots.

Over a season (and over multiple seasons) it evens out.

Remember that one of CB's arguments against Tuiaki is that his long drives meant the defense got hurt and couldn't make big plays. I'd argue that ARod's long drives mean the defense is fresh and is able to play aggressively and make big plays.
