Lesson learned. I wouldn't say anything this time but if/when she asks again you can encourage her to budget her money
more wisely and wish her good luck. After all, she's not going to starve. As you said, they are both bright kids. They can figure out how to put food on the table.

By the way, did she actually ask for help or did she just express concern at her situation and your wife jumped in to offer? Because that makes a difference in how to respond going forward.
