I think the point is that prior to this season your loss count DID matter. I recognize the OP paints with a broad brush but the loudest U fans I know talk as though they have been in the playoffs every year when in reality they were the worst P5 champion with the worst record of the 5, and STILL acted like they were on par with Ohio State and Alabama.
