But if it weren't for everything you pointed out here, I could see myself, under very very unique circumstances, not completely hating it if Utah had some success. The thing is, I was born and raised in Utah and have enormous pride in my home state. Many of the Utah players are Utahns and a not small number of them share the same values I do. Their coach is a former BYU player. They represent a lot of things I care about.

So I cheer for them losing not just because of the schadenfreude after so many years of them acting like they were the greatest gift to college football, but because I hope some losses will bring some much needed humility. I do hope there can come a time where there is some grudging respect between the schools.

Their toxic fans do make us look good by comparison, but they make the state look bad. I have lived out of state my entire professional career and that will continue for the foreseeable future. I hate that I might run into people who have had their entire view of the state colored by interactions with Ute fans on Twitter.
