My daughter when she was 12 attended the BYU-UVU women's soccer game a couple years ago. She was training with one of the UVU soccer players and was cheering for UVU. As an enthusiastic fan she was cheering loudly. There were some female BYU fans (about 10 of them) two rows ahead of us that were about 15 or 16, who were making fun of my daughter. They were mocking her and being pretty mean.
I hate to point this out, but making fun of a 12-year-old, is pretty despicable. My daughter was pretty neutral on BYU up until that point, now she hates the school. She is starting to get attention and at 14 she is starting on the JV team, comes of the bench for the Varsity team, and plays up a year for her LaRoca club team. She wouldn't even consider going to BYU's soccer camp over the summer and I had to send her out of state.
So for people that pretend like your fans are always great, many are, but many aren't. Let me also say that with all the other BYU fans and adults that were around, nobody did anything to prevent it or stop it. They just sat there and let it happen. So I am not super sympathetic when it happens to BYU fans.
