First off, 61% completion percentage is bad for a QB in 2024. It was ok in 1990, but that was 30 years ago.
Here’s the main part I take issue with: you’re upset because CB doesn’t think he will amount to a D1 QB.
BYU isn’t looking for a D1 QB. We’re looking for a good to great D1 QB. Jake has absolutely proved that he can play at a D1 level, as evidence by his play last night. He was light years ahead of Wyoming’s QB and he’s better than other guys starting across the country.
But “good enough to play D1” is a really low standard for a P4 school and a school like BYU, where we have a rich tradition of QB play.
Honestly, every single QB on our roster should be able to go out and do what JR did against Wyoming. Wyoming is awful. Last night should not alleviate the pressure on JR to take care of the ball. He should still be on a short leash. Beating an awful Wyoming should not make up for poor play. That being said, JR should start against Kansas State.
I do agree with the praise you give JR about his confidence. He’s got the confidence of an all time QB, and it never dwindles. That’s a good thing. But he hasn’t played like an all time QB yet. He hasn’t even played like a great QB yet. He fluctuates between bad and pretty good. It’s great that he has confidence, but reigning that in a little bit would be a good thing, IMO.
