-Retzlaff's stats looked better than his performance felt. I wonder if that's an indicator of why the coaches picked him. His flaws are obvious (and will no doubt be beaten into dust by CB), but he does have a playmaking ability that maybe Bohanon hasn't shown. His turnovers are the major problem that can't be tolerated for much longer.
-This may be the most athletic defense BYU has ever had. We won the game with open-field tackling and vicious edge pursuit. Those are historic areas of weakness that look like real strengths this season. To no one's surprise, our safeties and interior D-line are probably still the weakest areas of the defense.
-Impossible to resist pointing out that we also won the game with a heavy dose of drop 8. The shallow cover/QB spy scheme was good, though. It worked really well against Jennings.
-Our O-line is simply night and day better than last year, especially Etienne. He looks like a completely different player.
-Overall, the only downer for me is I couldn't go in person. Long story, but I had to sacrifice BYU football duties for some dad duties. That's just the stage of life I'm in.
-I feel genuinely sorry for any fans that are so caught up in the team's flaws (which are numerous) that they can't relax and enjoy winning a tight, tough game on the road. It's too bad BYU football is such a miserable experience for them.
I couldn't be happier that we're 2-0. Hopefully we handle business against Wyoming. I think this team is obviously progressing in the right direction and will have a great chance to make a bowl after a 3-0 start.
