Wait, you didn’t die by driving RWD in the winter? My worst winter driver was FWD, understeer is terrifying.
RWD is easy as you can oversteer to your advantage, it’s all about throttle control, good tires also help.
If he can afford two sets, I really like Blizzak, they cut through black ice as well as any tire I’ve used and that’s a danger for any drivetrain, but I would not use blizzaks the other 3 seasons they’d wear too fast.

Get a CB person to go buy new tires and give them the ‘opportunity’ to drive the car to Cedar to break them in
