Best and safest IMO is 4 snow tires on Front Wheel drive.
I can go anywhere a 4WD without snow tires can go. Not nearly as efficient on rear wheel and so much safer on ice with 4 snow tires. I swap my tires from first to mid december through about March depending on the winter. I drive a Camry and never been stuck. Been in some nasty conditions up the canyons, going to Idaho and I-15 between Scipio and higher elevations after Beaver. Love my Blizzaks. Present snow tires have gone 4 winters now and still got 1 maybe 2 more winters left. I do not take them all the way to the wear bars either. Depends on length of winter and not sharp cornering on dry pavement how many miles you get.
Plenty of internet videos of snow tires vs all seasons and front vs rear wheel drive.
Just my preference. Michelins are awesome as well.

Oh, snow tires work better, especially on ice, because of the softness of the rubber. Hard driving will wear them quickly.
