Utah is able to run a defensive style we
are not. Chalk it up to whatever you want, but it's tough as nails to get top notch DB talent to come to Provo. Utah has been able to get very talented DB's that are capable of manning up. By manning up, Utah is able to send on average five guys, but as many as 7 or 8 given the play at the QB. We can't do that. Our DB talent simply is not there. We typically average a 4-man rush, one of which is linebacker size instead of linemen size. So it's like we have a 3-1/2 man rush as compared to Utah's 4-1/2-6 man rush. Because of the amount of guys we have to keep in coverage, we can't come close to generating the same type of pressure on the QB.

That said, where the 3-4 becomes equal to and as aggressive as the 4-3, is in disguising and sending multiple blitzes. For whatever reason, we have done a very poor job of disguising our blitzes the past few years. I believe this will come in time, as Bronco becomes more and more familiar with the 3-4, and as Bronco becomes more confident in the players abilities to execute blitzes.
