Some of the plays that appear to be bone headed are actually throwing in variety

to make things difficult for D to plan. Listen to almost any expert discuss ARod's play calling and they emphasize the diversity of plays that makes life hard on defenses. Sometimes a play that looks less than ideal is also setting up a pattern to break in the future. Establishing a pattern for D to rely on that creates success in the future when the pattern is broken.
