This. We do this from time to time, esp if it's for something not covered by our insurance. We've never been questioned
about it.
TBH, doctors and offices don't mind it at all when you do, either. They typically have a non-insurance rate and they're happy to not have to deal with the mess of filing. It's also nice for you because - to counter the point of a few in this thread - the offices or providers can give you a clear cost for the procedure/visit, whereas with insurance they can't because they have no idea what insurance will adjust.
I am no fan of Obamacare; but one thing I do like that was never fully implemented was cost transparency.

One of my kids had surgery recently. The hospital required me to call in advance to get a financial estimate.
