That’s why the community would need to band together. Not everyone will be in a
situation where they can or will be prepared. And I don’t believe Jesus’ suggestion that doing things to the least of these has an emergency exception. In fact, I think the warning, “What does it profit a man to save his life and lose his soul?”, relates directly to this kind of situation.

It would be bad to hoard for a year, and then die and lose your soul after 18 months, or even survive many years as the person who would selfishly not help others. Everyone dies, so no sense being crazy to buy yourself another couple of days, months, or decades.

In your situation, I would get enough food that you could get to where you needed to, a couple of days worth of water, water purification, and a 72 hour kit. Then as you get through school and into your career you can keep building little by little over time to cover the basic needs for a year (food, fuel, water, shelter, clothing, and hand tools).

I still need to add toothpaste, soap, and toilet paper to my preparedness (we luckily had enough during Covid thanks to a timely buy two get three free right before Covid).
