I grew up in the time when we were told to have a year supply of longer lasting
food and a three month supply of food we normally eat. I have a large storage room in my basement, so that’s what I have tried to do. I also have two weeks of water, and then the ability to capture and purify water.

They used to recommend a year supply of fuel, if possible. I found that a gallon of Coleman fuel will last two weeks on a Coleman gas burning stove (3 20 minute cooking sessions a day), so I would buy a gallon or two every two weeks. Unopened and stored properly, they essentially last forever. 24 gallons should last about a year. I didn’t want to rely on wood, because we don’t exactly live in a forest. I also have a solar generator as another possible cooking source, but useful for campoits and tailgating.

So, besides, food, fuel, water, and useful hand tools, that’s about all the prepping I am doing. I do like guns and so I keep enough ammo for defense and opportunistic hunting (we’ve had deer, ducks, pheasant, dove, and a fox wander into our backyard).

But most everything I have done is covered by the Provident Living website. I think going well beyond what is recommended would be extreme. For example, I have watched many doomsday preppers episode and every one of them seemed extreme. One guy fed his family bugs so they would be okay eating bugs if they had to. Others focused on having multiple caches of food, or arming themselves to the teeth in remote locations. I think that is extreme. But it is a judgment call for everyone. If we were still in an apartment I would focus more on the food we normally eat and water purification and work within the confines of my limited space. I expect God will bless those who do what they can with the right attitude about it.
