I had a similar view, although it was 15+ years ago.

I knew several people that took ambulance rides from collisions on the trail so I always rode on the road. The only time I rode on the trail was when I needed to a recovery ride and ride and forced myself to ride slow. Cell phone and increased traffic have probably changed the math
