Starting from 2010 (before that 247 rankings were pretty janky), here's BYU QB recruits divided into two groups - what I normally consider the unofficial dividing line between "highly rated" and "not highly rated"

TOP 1000 rated QB recruits

If you want to add in transfers, you can add Kedon Slovis to the first list and Cade Fennegan to the second.  Gerry Bohanon's would also be in the second group (not based off initial recruit rating, but figuring out where his transfer rating would slot him in that year)

There's been some success among the less-touted group (Baylor Romney), though most have needed to change positions (or more likely were initially recruited to a different position) to see the field (Kai Nacua, Neil Pau'u, Hayden Livingston).

And the highly recruited guys haven't all been studs.  Heaps didn't live up to the hype (still better than most on the less-recruited list, but not up to what was expected) and Conover seems to have not panned out at all.

But overall, it's pretty clear that the track record with Top 1000 guys is a LOT better than guys who are rated lower. 

It's also worth noting that we're living in the portal since this is the longest we've gone without a Top 1000 guy. Longest prior gap was 3 years between Taysom and Jaren Hall. Now it's been 6 seasons (although we did get Slovis).
