Yep, I had a friend kind of like the OP son

Hated school. Tried college for a semester and failed out. Went into the air force for maybe 10 years. Got discharged for medical reasons. Went back to school with more discipline and graduated in mechanical engineering, even though he had to start with college algebra or lower.

So military worked out for him in the long run.
