I am retired, sort of. I was a CIO of a few very large corporations before I
retired. The IT guy. Also VP of Operations a couple of times.
In my retirement, I manage the investment properties I accumulated along the way and, of course, my 401K, IRA, and stock accounts.
I let TrowePrice manage my 401k because they did a great job when I was employed by that employer and compared favorably to the 401K accounts that 2 subsequent employers provided. I use it to benchmark returns in my self-managed investments. I rolled one of those subsequent 2 401K accounts into a self managed IRA and cashed the smaller one out. I have a couple of regular brokerage accounts that I self manage.
My vacation rental business near Bryce Canyon takes the most time. It is fun given people from around the world that visit. I live in CA, but have local housekeeping, maintenance, landscape maintenance, and snow removal help at the ranch. I handle the bookings, pay the bills, and take guest calls. Although I take a few direct bookings, I contract with AirBnB, VRBO, and Booking.com for the vast majority of the bookings and the latter two subcontract with pretty much every booking site out there. Even these automated bookings require some work on my part, varying by booking site, to ensure credit cards get charged, taxes get charged and remitted to the state, and records are complete for my tax accountant.
I own and self-manage 13 single family home rental properties and advise friends and relatives about their own properties when they ask for advice. Free advice. Danger zone. Except I do not sell them anything.
I live on a working lemon and avocado grove in California and the vacation rental business in Utah is on a working cattle and horse rescue ranch. My sons and I own the horses. I lease grazing rights to a friend who owns the cattle.
I have an MBA and an undergraduate degree in Computer Science with an Accounting Minor.
