When someone says a college player is an NFL guy I interpret it different
than you do I guess. I don't assume it means they are currently in the NFL, I mean it to be that they are guys who will play in the NFL at some point

And when someone says "chances are he plays in the NFL" that could (based on issues with the E glish language" either be present tense or intended as future tense. I read it as future but can see how you read it as present, which I think is the crux of the issue at this point
