Just look around. For example, did ASU gel as a team last year…Of course they did. It’s all about coaching guys.
It does concern me that Byu seems to downplay what a tremendous advantage using the portal can be, especially for Byu, because of its unique program.
I get that you want to retain your own guys and develop younger players. But the reality is players coming out of high school are a crapshoot. Even the four-star guys, you never know how they’re going to develop because there are so many factors that go into it. What will their work ethic be. How will they handle studies and social challenges. Etc. etc.
The thing that Kevin Young has shown is that it is not for lack of donor and university support if Kalani and company fail to take advantage of the opportunity in front of them. It is all about coaching. Other coaches successfully bring in new guys have them gel into the program and succeed at high levels. There is no reason Byu can’t do the same.
If we blow this opportunity to take advantage of the momentum we have in the program and fill our roster with needs from the portal, and slip back into a mediocrity, look no farther than Kalani for the reason. It is his call and on him one way or another.
