kimdaddy35 Former Fly Half
Thoughts, myths and half truths from Saturday's game
1. I was really impressed with the way this team fought in the 2nd half, particularly the offense. They were getting their butts handed to them and really stepped it up and flipped a switch and played amazingly in the 2nd half.

2. Jake is an imperfect QB. That throw down the sideline to JoJo might have won it. But he struggled with any pass he has to put air under the ball. You love his moxie, you love his ability to not get frazzled in a game like this, but his inability to make these throws is why you wonder what his ceiling is. I'm also not sure what he was reading on the interception, he threw one similar a few plays earlier that if the DB paid better attention could have been an interception. I'll ride with Jake as my QB this year and even into next year, but he isn't John Beck about to blossom. I can't remember ever seeing a QB with his throwing motion succeed at a high level (I'm sure it has happened, I just don't remember an instance).

3. What happened to our stout defense? In 8 drives where they were trying to score, Arizona St had over 450 yards of offense. We forced one punt. Even on that drive they had 35 yards of offense before punting. We stopped them on 4th down at our own 4 and our own 11. If they had more faith in the kicking game then it likely would have been over 34-23. But even with the stops, 28 points on 8 drives is absolutely horrendous. We are getting back to Tuiaki days here for anyone to try and put lipstick on that pig. Our D-Line got absolutely manhandled and our safeties played poorly for the most part.

4. Conversely the offense scored 23 points on 8 drives including 20 in the 2nd half on 4 drives. That is just under 3 points per drive which would put them as a top 20 offense against a solid defense. The slow start was a problem, but the biggest problem is they didn't get opportunities. Most games have 12-13 possessions. We had 8. We scored TDs on our first 3 in the 2nd half, but to only get 4 is a travesty.

5. As someone that has coached some special teams that onside kick is hard to forgive. Alfrey was "cheating" his duties to try and get a head start on his blocking assignment. His number one job is to wait and make sure the ball is kicked deep. He failed. While it is just a mistake, it is something that coaching can't let happen. K-Pop has been very good, that was a huge one that changed this game.

6. This season has been all A's from the coaching staff. We are 9-2 with a team predicted to be 4-8 and 13th in the conference. We are 9-2 with recruiting rankings that are 16th in the conference. I know this seems hard for many to get their brains around, but BYU did not have the most talent on the field on Saturday. It is why both lines got pushed around. BYU has rarely had more talent on the field this season. I hate the way we have recruited under Sitake and have made my criticisms known (too much so). But to criticize coaches and call for jobs in this year may be the dumbest thing I have ever read on CB. I honestly can't fathom it.

7. With that being said. BYU needed to pass on every first down on Saturday. Our O-Line was getting dominated and running the ball when expected results in some big losses. We needed them to play the pass and then adjust to the run. We have a WR group that can get open and their secondary was not great. Unfortunately we also have a QB that throws low passes that often get tipped. Hindsight is 20/20, but our O-line got owned and we needed to try and out finesse them. We made the adjustment at halftime. To be fair we didn't really have enough possessions in the first half to make any real adjustments there.
