I keep reading that the committee won't punish teams for a CCG loss.... but that's just not true historically

If you look at every year, teams that have lost in the CCG have dropped. They don't drop huge amounts, consistent with the idea that they (generally) lost to a very good team, but it's not like the committee just ignores or excuses the loss

In total, over the last 5 (non-COVID) years that's 29 teams that entered the conference championship game ranked by the committee.... and lost.

24 of those 29 dropped in the rankings *kudos to 2021 Houston who somehow improved their resume/ranking despite taking a loss

The average drop was 2.21 spots (at least)

The median drop was 2 spots

If anything, the committee has shown more willingness recently (post-COVID) to drop teams for losing in a CCG.  The last 3 years the average (and median) drop has been about 3 spots

So no, 2 or 3 spots isn't a huge drop.  But if you need to be a top 12 team, 2 or 3 spots can absolutely be a killer.  And that's hoping it isn't worse with a logjam of SEC teams in the same ranking tier
