Jake says it too: "make the most important thing, the most important thing."
BYU is playing moneyball right now. They have their own way of valuing performance on the field that differs from the writers, coaches and other naysayers.
Examples:
1. 3rd down conversion %? Conventional wisdom says this is important.
BYU says this is not important. (because they play 4 down ball from the 45 yard line and forward).
2.Special teams points? CW: Mildly important, just take care of the ball; BYU VERY important, coach players to score on special teams.
3. Number of interceptions? CW: Just luck, not important to emphasize in coaching ; BYU: a defense can create them, they are VERY important, coach to guide players into positions of predictably higher probability for interceptions.
I'm sure there are more that could be articulated, but I think BYU is so undervalued because Vegas and pundits don't see the game the BYU coaching staff does. We now know what Kalani knew in the pre-season, even BEFORE fall camp!
