which is wrong. “Forward thinking” doesn’t mean someone who gets excited about Apple TV. Obviously you need people to get money from the church and donors, I just believe that someone who is a CEO type person can do that just as well (with BS and CL as associates, plus all the alumni your little heart desires) as a former player fan-favorite.
Unfortunately, you’re using an outdated model of what college football is, and I’m looking at what it’s going to be based on meetings that I’ve heard with assistant athletic directors of big universities. College football is, and will continue to be, becoming more of a business model with each passing year. Many people speculate private ownership of athletic departments or even just football is imminent. And you can’t tell me that this isn’t happening, because I have heard the conversations in person myself.
If BYU is to survive, they need somebody who understands that world and can navigate it with little, to no learning curve because the deadlines are coming fast. This athletic Director has to be somebody who can be involved in huge contract negotiations with multiple corporations and other business entities. BYU needs this now with this hire. The days of treating college athletics as anything less than professional sports are over, and those who do not understand that and will not bend the knee will get left behind in a big big big way.
