BackPacker Take a Hike
The 3 big options Catchings will likely be considering:
1: Transfer to a school like Indiana back in his home state. They've lost all their players to the portal in the midst of hiring DeVries from West Virginia. So, they're very much rebuilding from scratch and so he'd have a considerable opportunity to emerge as "the guy" or at least a staple guy for them now that he's got a year of familiarity with the college game under his built and what he has to work on this off season. IU is only an hour away from his home so his family (mom, aunt, etc.) would likely be in attendance for virtually all home games.

2: After some thoughtful consideration, he decides that returning to the system he already knows at BYU could be in his best interest. There, he can work with the NBA experienced staff he now knows well to improve and develop the weaknesses and inconsistencies learned from this year into some strengths. Both he and the staff will have learned a lot after a season of being immersed in the college game and the Big12 this past season and would be able to collaborate together on what he now needs to do to take a leap into becoming a "super sophomore". He puts his "shoulder to the wheel" and goes hard at being the best version of himself he can be this offseason en route to a special sophomore year back at BYU.

3: Despite the disappointing up and down season he had this past year, he still tests the NBA waters. Goes through some workouts and plays in the summer combine the same way Jaxson Robinson did last summer, and what Richie Saunders is likely to do this year as well. He could then decide from there whether to really return to college, or decide he's willing to take a chance being drafted mid to late 2nd round on account of his measurables and potential, and then be willing to work his way onto an NBA roster via the G league. Seeing how introverted he seems to be with his personality and one who doesn't seem to like cameras and attention very much, I would not be surprised to see him be willing to go this route. He might in fact feel more comfortable working on his development off the radar in the G league and away from all the media there is on big name college teams. Though, if he ever does make an NBA roster and goes on to be a key contributor on an NBA team, he's going to have learn to be more comfortable on camera doing interviews and what not as that all comes with the territory there. But I'm sure by then, he'd be more than OK with that.

Something to keep in mind from watching his Deep Blue: He rode the bench his freshman year in high school and went through a bit of disappointment and frustration with that. But he took that in stride, worked hard that summer and made a huge jump going into his high school sophomore season and quickly rose to prominence there from which his high school career really took off. So, I expect he'll be able to reflect on that same experience from high school and apply the same work ethic this off season to improve on the weaknesses and inconsistencies he now knows he has by virtue of being a freshman new to the college game. He can take a step back and realize that this is a normal process for the vast majority of college freshman to go through, even for many who go on to star in the NBA down the road.

Whichever route Kanon goes, but especially if he stays in college, I expect he'll rise to at least the same level as Jaxson Robinson was for BYU last year, but with the added height and length Kanon has. Whether that's back at BYU or closer to home for a school like Indiana, I fully expect he'll really shine as a sophomore wherever he ends up at. I expect he'll be more consistent with his shooting, and at least somewhat improved on defense. Whether that's as a starter or getting starter minutes as a 6th man the way Robinson did last year at BYU.

No doubt he'll likely enter the portal regardless and likely still test the NBA waters as mentioned above, but when players do that, it doesn't always mean they are 100% opposed to returning back. In fact, most guys who hit the portal out there probably keep a return back to the same team as an option if the coaching staff is willing to have them back and there aren't any burnt bridges in such situations. They are often just gauging their market value, leveraging for better NIL to stay, and/or seeing if there really is a better opportunity for them to move on to.

So with that all said...

GO COUGS!...AND...GO KANNON!

(except if on a team playing against BYU in an important game next year)
