They are a good tune up for March Madness and it gives other teams a chance

to make it in. in that way, it's a play in tournament for March Madness although a league with a lot of tournament bids is less likely to have a non tournament team win it all. It can also build a lot of respect for a program going forward and get some attention if they win it.

It is everything for smaller conferences. Much less important for bigger ones.
