Ok figured it out
The Apple TV connects into a device that pumps up the dialogue volume. I am unplugged it and plugged it back in and all of a sudden everything is visible again.
Thanks all for giving it some thought.

Doesn't make sense to me. The tv and the Apple TV don't need to talk at all

Try holding down menu and volume down buttons (or volume up depending on model).
