Doesn't make sense to me. The tv and the Apple TV don't need to talk at all
Apple TV should just be transmitting the video/audio signal via hdmi just like a dvd player or anything else. Are you sure you are on the right input?

Try holding down menu and volume down buttons (or volume up depending on model).
