I think at the end of the day, Wakely is a 105 casualty.
He was a walk on who started several games in 2023 after injuries decimated the safety room. He and Slade both. I think he played fine in 2023, but the defense as a whole was very subpar and downright bad as injuries mounted and the season wore on.

In 2024, he was again slated for the back up role, but won the job early on and kept it until injured. He beat out scholarship players who were either younger or older players returning from injuries. He played well in 2024 and had some great moments. Baylor in particular.

I think he was looking for a scholarship and possibly confirmation he would be starting next year and he was not given any assurances, given the depth of the safety room, specifically younger players who are being developed. Damuni, first and foremost, I would say is the expected spring ball Strong Safety #1. Others could be in the mix like Satuala. Whatever answers Crew got from the coaching staff pushed him to the portal, but I don't think they were willing to guarantee him a scholly and the 105 roster limit played a big part in this.
