So 30 years ago I tied a few as a novice. I

I was terrible. I really didn't know what I was doing. But I also learned that it seems to cost way more money to tie my own than to just buy some on the internet.

I am not dialed in to the fly fishing world at all. Do a lot of people still tie their own flies? Is it kind of a dying art?

Yes, still very much a core aspect of fly fishing. People who only fish a few times a year are likely just buying

It can be more expensive to tie rather than buy if you don't fish a lot.
