If I recall, there were tons of people on here who dismissed our KenPom ranking
going into conference play saying it was fools gold and BYU hadn't proven anything yet and were likely to get ripped apart in conference play. Then their rating held up as they went 10-8 in conference and finished with a top-20 ranking. There is a reason why KenPom is one of the metrics that NCAA committee looks at when evaluating teams. In fact, the 7 metrics the NCAA selection committee is provided are:

1. NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET)
2. Pomeroy Rankings (KenPom)
3. Basketball Power Index (BPI)
4. Torvik Rankings
5. KPI
6. Strength of Record (SOR)
7. Wins Above Bubble (WAB)

Metrics 2-4 above are "Quality" based rankings that are based on efficiency and try to measure how "good" a team is, while metrics 5-7 are "Resume" based rankings that try to measure the resume of each team (quality wins, bad losses, etc.)

Bart Torvik has a nice page on his website that shows all 7 of these metrics in one large table for comparison:

In the "quality" metrics, KenPom is actually the lowest for BYU (49). Torvik is 31 and BPI is 35. What is hurting BYU the most right now is their resume rankings where they are hovering around #60ish - primarily due to a weak SOS and not having any real quality wins on their resume yet. Which is why BYU really needs to be successful in conference play if they want to make the tournament. So while I won't fret and worry about a blowout loss on the road to Houston in isolation, I do see a sense of urgency where the team needs to start winning some big games if they want to be in the big dance come March. Hopefully we start down that path tonight in our game vs. Texas Tech (which is currently a Q1 game).
