I agree that having owners of CFB teams just continues to make it feel less pure than the good old days.
However, current NIL landscape with no rules has money flowing in ways that don’t make sense. Fans should pay for tickets and merchandise…not player salaries. Owners (until now, the universities) who make the money from media contracts, ticket sales, merch, concessions, etc should be the ones paying the players out of the money generated by the players. Their excuse has been that the money is already spoken for by other things at the university (mostly other sports/Title IX, paying coaches, etc). I’d rather have the system figure out how the sport makes enough money to pay for itself after covering the basic financial needs of the university…than to have unregulated asking for handouts from boosters/fans not tied to anything but paying players.
Seems like a financial owner could help align incentives better than they are today
