Ohio State was clearly not the #6 team ( resulting in the #8 seed). Why did the committee do that? Because they were committed to to honoring the conference pecking order. But because Indiana had a softer schedule and Ohio State a tougher schedule and Penn State something in the middle, Penn State got the second place position, even though they were clearly not as good as Ohio State. They lost on the field to Ohio State and also on "the eye test"
ACC tie breaks resulted in probably the weakest of the three ACC teams getting in on a fluke upset
The conferences are sooo huge now and that results in extremely unbalanced schedules. So it's hard to get a good pecking order out if the conferences.
And the committee was committed (maybe mistakenly) to honoring those relative rankings out of the conferences....which were flawed. This resulted in a flawed CFB ranking which resulted in all the upsets in the last 48 hours.
For example, if they had swapped OSU and PSU.... Oregon probably beats PSU again, and you don't have EVERY game an upset.
