One of only about 50-60 comprehensive cancer centers across the country. But even then, huntsman probably isn’t in the top 10-15 of most rankings of comprehensive cancer centers.
It’s tough to come up with these lists and rankings because even within a relatively narrowed subject of “cancer” you have so many different subspecialties. Sarcoma, breast, neuroendocrine, colorectal, cutaneous, leukemia/lymphoma/myeloma, etc and some cancer centers might be top-5 in one discipline while they are middle or lower pack in others.
But to be considered a “top tier” med school you need to excel in many, if not the majority of sub-specialties within medicine. Again, Utah is a good med school. But my medical training to date has been split between Arizona and Florida and people in Utah tend to have a much more inflated view of Utah’s med school prestige than those outside of Utah.
I’m not saying this to duke on Utah. They’re rated higher than my own med school and I would have loved to go there if I had the chance. I’m also not saying BYU’s new school will ever reach or exceed the overall rank or prestige of Utah. It might, it might not. To be determined and there are obviously a lot of unknowns as to how BYU’s school will operate.
My post is merely to be taken at face value. Utah is an overall solid/good, but not elite/world class medical institution.
