I have no problem with saying the Huntsman Center is world class…
It is—and it is affiliated with the University of Utah. My coworker tells of a time when she was at the Huntsman for her son, and was thought to be a housekeeping maid by Saudi security who were there for a Saudi princess who was receiving cancer treatment (they brought their silver serving trays and dishes).

I get that in some important ways, such as coveted players it is a zero sum game—there is a limited number of the best players. But that doesn’t always transfer to other academic programs.

There is room for both schools to have medical schools that are both world class. BYU has not even opened their doors, but the aspirations are there. The Board of Trustees have said that the emphasis will be different and needed in a growing church and needy world.

I don’t think it is sound thinking to equate success in athletics both on the court and field as well as the transfer portal with the quality of medical schools particularly with one that has yet to be built. The institution and fans should stay focused on the bigger picture and not get involved in verbal food fights.

In the 1960s when Rex Lee and Bruce Hafen were tasked to start a Law School, Quinney Law professors were rightly concerned that BYU would take their place as the premier law school in Utah. What has happened is that both schools have specialized. Quinney has some fine environmental and water right scholars among other studies, and JR Clark has been a leader in law and ethics and religion. Yes, BYU has overtaken them in rankings and Supreme Court clerkships, but it did not get there by dunking on Quinney. The same can be said for the new medical school and the one at the U of U.
