A couple of things come to mind: I’ve been at the airport early for an international flight where I did hit a Visa issue
during check-in that took a long time to resolve at the counter. Also, international flights are often larger aircraft that take longer to board, so they start boarding much earlier. And they are often in terminals that take longer to get to your gate.
