I have the nice situation where our company home office is overseas. I travel a lot for work, so I don't get the angst of managers wanting to see their underlings in the office all the time.
Before Covid, I was in an office every day for a half dozen years.
I had spent the previous dozen years working out of a home office, so I asked my manager if I could WFH.
He said it was really important to be in the office and collaborate with others. He had 30+ years in the company and was a global director.
Then Covid hit.
Within 2 weeks of him being forced to WFH, he changed his mind and said that he didn't ever want to go back to the office. He felt like the team worked as well or better from home. We collaborated just fine. His eyes had been opened.
Additionally, when I travel, I'm gone 24/7 from my home. Chores don't get done, relationships need renewal. I don't sweat the hours.
I get stuff done, regardless of the time of day. If I have a 6:00 am meeting, I take it. If I have an 9:30 pm meeting, I take that. I never count my hours, nor do I feel guilty about taking a nap in the afternoon, or going to a doctor's appointment.
Next month I'll travel to SF, and Dallas, and Chicago, and New Orleans and Pittsburgh - so no, I'll never understand the WFH angst by management. I definitely side with the employees. No need to further take precious time from my day for a worthless commute - just to "collaborate." The company needs to hire who they can trust to be professional.
