I wouldn’t fault someone for starting out or ending their career in government for one reason or another, but to spend the bulk of your career with government is just sad.

The people who aren’t good at what they do end up teaching and/or working for the government.

By your own admission, you don’t want the added stress that comes with more accountability. There’s little pressure to get things done in a timely manner, and that is why (once again by your own admission) you don’t work late hours or worry about work once you are done for the day.
