upgrading would make sense. I think I'll stick with gas if I stay in the 1/2 ton segment. But I may also go 3/4 ton in the future and look more at the diesels.

You meant 5k. Even towing a 5000lb car the difference and safety between 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton is night and day.
