Good drivers today can keep themselves and their passengers safer. Poor drivers
can’t or don’t. Self-driving cars only work if the overall fatality rate goes down. But lower numbers don’t mean the same people die. When computers do all the driving, the deaths that occur will be more random. Since the multiverse isn’t real, we’ll never know who would have died under the old, skilled-driver paradigm. We’ll just have to deal with the ones who die under the new system. It won’t be a driver’s fault. It’ll be some corporation and their computers.

Does that make us feel better? Is it comforting?
