A single (or a few) rentals is like owning a single/few stocks. It's risky.
If you have someone else managing the property and a diversified portfolio it can have great returns and not be a headache.

I currently have one rental managed by a company. I forget it's even there other than my account gets a few hundred in cash flow every month. I'm going to add a second rental in a few months that I will manage myself. Someday I hope to have many more managed by others.
