Again, this is not to tear us down, but to emphasize how much of an issue there is with the system that provides advantages to SEC teams
Alabama
- Lost to Vandy by 5.
- If they had not thrown a pick returned for a touchdown, they probably win that game.
- If they don't fumble on a late drive down 5, they likely win that game. Switch either of those plays, and they win that game, only have two losses and make the playoffs
- Lost to Tennessee by 7
- If they hadn't been called for defensive holding on 3rd down in Tennessee, then Tennessee doesn't go and score the go-ahead touchdown
Change any of those three plays and Alabama wins one more game and makes the playoff
Haven't looked at the rest, but would bet it's similar.
- Miami had two losses....both by 5 points or less.
- South Carolina lost by 3 to LSU on a missed FG and by 2 to Alabama where their last few drives included a fumble and another missed FG
- Ole Miss had three one possession losses, including an OT loss to LSU, 7 point loss to Florida with both of the last Ole Miss drives ending in interceptions, and a 3 point loss to Kentucky where they missed a game-tying FG at the end
I'm not going through the play by play, but I would be shocked if there wasn't a bad turnover, a dropped interception, a failed 3rd or 4th down stop/conversion that wouldn't have changed the result of those games.
All 4 of those teams were one play away from the playoff, and most of them have a few options of which one play...so long as you choose the right play to turn a loss into a win
