He doesn't need a coach to get him to the NBA. He could skip his freshman season and still be (at worst) a top 3 pick
Assuming there was no horrid reason for missing his freshman year (if he was incarcerated for murder, it would probably drop his draft stock).
So he doesn't need a coach to make him a top pick. But if he's going to play one year of college basketball, it makes sense that he wants that year to be the best, most memorable experience possible
