Something clearly isn't working with the offense. I'm not sure if it's culture or talent, but status quo isn't going to get it done. We need to make some changes.
Here's why, and I would love to hear anyone's response to these thoughts.
1. Most units get better as the season progresses. That hasn't been the case for the BYU office. Misfires on play execution, dropped passes, general sloppy play. Is it coaching? Is it talent? Is it culture? I'm not sure, but it needs to be addressed, and that falls on the OC.
2. A Rod's inability to recruit the Quarterback position is a huge concern. The transfer portal is great, but we need to develop talent in house. We need to recruit and develop high school QB's, and A Rod have shown ANY evidence that he's able to do that. He can develop guys, but he's can't recruit them, and that's a problem.
3. An apparent disconnect when it comes to situational awareness and play calling. A Rod is clearly a very intelligent and creative offensive mind. What isn't clear is if he understand WHEN to call what play. Our 3rd down inefficiency the last few years are evidence of such.
I think most of our offensive woes stem from this three issues. Replacing the GAPING deficiency in our O line coaching and development helped immensely, but the other issues that plagued us last year remain. They need to be addressed if we want to see a BYU offense in the top 4th of the conference.
