I don't think he's ever been a "BYU guy". He's a Utah (mostly the state, partly the University) guy
He likes and respects BYU. And he appreciates that it's in the state of Utah and is run by someone he knows and trusts from his days at the University of Utah.
But I don't think he's ever said anything to imply he has some overarching loyalty to BYU above anywhere else.
Which isn't a criticism of him. He's absolutely focused on his job and likes BYU and does a great job there
