You guys are making an argument that you struggled against P5 teams because you were G5. You guys also make the argument that you deserved to be national champions in 1984 Despite the fact that you didn’t play a single team that finished the year ranked. In other words, you have to argue that you would have beaten anyone you played. The statistics don’t seem to back that up. Your great coach struggled against P5 teams. He especially struggled in games against P5 .500 teams and above.
So I think it’s fair to say you were G5 and therefore would have lost to good teams in 1984 had you played them. Or, you could say you rose above G5 status and were the best in the country. But then that would nullify your G5 excuse for the rest of Lavell’s career.
So either be good and capable of beating anyone or accept you were G5 and you only won your games against decent teams at a 30% clip.
